Description
Presented is a third-party graded.900 FINE SILVER LAFAYETTE DOLLAR
issued by the United States Mint in 1900 “which was the first commemorative coin of one-dollar denomination and the first coin to bear a portrait of a U.S. president.”
The obverse of the coin bears the portraits of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.
The reverse has an image of a stature of Lafayette astride a horse which “is similar to the monument of General Lafayette that was later erected in Paris as a gift of the American people’,
Around the edge of the reverse are the words
ERECTED BY THE YOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES IN HONOR OF GEN. LAFAYETTE *PARIS 1900*.
This mid-grade
uncirculated
coin has mar-free toned surfaces, a strong strike (showing the pattern design of the saddle blanket and delineation of the top of the boot and leg) and much eye appeal.
